Biography

John Cleese is an English actor, comedian, and screenwriter. Born in Weston-super-Mare in 1939, he emerged from the Cambridge Footlights in the 1960s and found success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and on The Frost Report. He co-founded Monty Python in the late 1960s and starred in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Life of Brian (1979), and The Meaning of Life (1983). He co-wrote and starred in Fawlty Towers as Basil Fawlty, winning the 1980 British Academy Television Award for Best Entertainment Performance. He wrote and starred in A Fish Called Wanda (1988), earning Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominations, and its follow-up Fierce Creatures (1997). His films include Time Bandits (1981), Silverado (1985), Rat Race (2001), and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003). He played R and Q in the James Bond films The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002), and won a Primetime Emmy for Cheers.

    Cleese's breakthrough on British television came as a performer on The Frost Report, in the 1966 "Class" sketch where his tall upper class figure was set against Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett.

  2. Getting ready for a role

    Cleese based Basil Fawlty on Donald Sinclair, a hotel owner he met in 1970 while the Monty Python team stayed at the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay, and he later called Sinclair the most wonderfully rude man he had ever met.
