Plot summary
After their honeymoon, Shrek and Princess Fiona are invited by her parents, King Harold and Queen Lillian, to a royal ball in the kingdom of Far Far Away. Shrek dreads being seen in the kingdom as an ogre and still resents the King and Queen for locking Fiona in a tower, but she talks him into going, and Donkey goes with them. Her parents are dismayed that the couple are ogres. A dinner argument between Shrek and Harold follows, and Shrek reads Fiona's childhood diary, which suggests she once admired Prince Charming. The Fairy Godmother, a potion-selling celebrity who had arranged for Charming to rescue Fiona, wants Shrek out of the way, and Harold hires the outlaw Puss in Boots.

- After the first Shrek became a hit, stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz negotiated $10 million each to voice the sequel, a huge jump from the $350,000 they were each paid for the original film.
- First-film screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio wanted Shrek 2 to be a traditional fairy tale, but they clashed with the producers over it and left the project, and Andrew Adamson replaced them as writer.
- An early draft of Shrek 2 had Shrek give up the throne and call a fairy-tale election, with Pinocchio running an "honesty" campaign and Gingy running a "smear" campaign, before director Andrew Adamson cut the idea for being too political and "intellectual" rather than emotional.
- Animating Puss in Boots' fur, belt and hat plume was difficult enough that DreamWorks had to build an entirely new set of production tools and upgrade its fur-rendering shader just for his character.
- Joan Rivers' cameo as herself was the first time the Shrek animation team had put a real person on screen, and for the UK release her voice was replaced by presenter Kate Thornton while her animated likeness stayed the same.
- Shrek 2 was the first film ever to open in more than 4,000 theaters, surpassing X2's release, and it held the record for the widest theater count for three years until Spider-Man 3 topped it in 2007.
- Shrek 2 sold over 37 million DVDs for $458 million, but DreamWorks printed 5 million more copies than it sold, and the resulting overstock made the studio miss its first-quarter earnings forecast that year by 25%.
