Plot summary
In Somerset County, Maine, as spring comes to the Arable farm, eight-year-old Fern discovers that her father John intends to kill the runt of a newborn pig litter. She pleads for the piglet, names him Wilbur and cares for him. Once Wilbur has grown, Fern takes him to the barnyard of her uncle Homer Zuckerman. There he is lonely and wants company, and the other animals refuse him: the rat Templeton, the sheep Samuel, the geese Gussy and Golly, the cows Bitsy and Betsy and the horse Ike. Charlotte A. Cavatica, a barn spider living above his sty, becomes his friend. Told by the animals that he will be readied for dinner by Christmas, Wilbur hears Charlotte promise a plan to save his life.

- Danny Elfman dropped out of Spider-Man 3 so that he could compose the score for Charlotte's Web, his second film for Nickelodeon Movies after Nacho Libre.
- Director Gary Winick insisted Charlotte the spider and Templeton the rat look realistic rather than stylized, and the animators argued over giving Charlotte a mouth before deciding to move her chelicerae instead.
- The song "Ordinary Miracle", written by Glen Ballard and Dave Stewart and performed by Sarah McLachlan for the soundtrack, was also sung by her at the opening ceremonies of her hometown Vancouver Winter Olympics.
