Plot summary
The show, staged at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles over four days in September 1980, mixes sketches the troupe made famous on television with new material. Michelangelo defends his first draft of The Last Supper against the Pope's objections; a Ministry of Silly Walks official struggles to get funding for his walk; communist leaders answer football trivia in a quiz; the Four Yorkshiremen compare hard childhoods; and the Bruces' Philosophers' Song has the Philosophy Department throwing cans of lager at the audience. Filmed inserts, some taken from German television specials, supply the Silly Olympics, whose events include sprints for runners with no sense of direction, and a football match between Greek and German philosophers.

- The 1980 Hollywood Bowl shows were recorded on "Image Vision", a specially made analogue high-definition video system from Image Transform of Universal City, California that output a 655-line, 24fps signal, and the tape was used to make a 35mm negative for theatrical prints.
- For the "Crunchy Frog" sketch, in which Terry Gilliam's policeman is sick into his own helmet, Gilliam filled his mouth with cold beef stew before running off stage so the vomiting could be performed.
- After the worldwide success of Life of Brian, the Pythons first planned to release a film of their two German TV specials redubbed and re-edited, but the idea proved impractical, so the Hollywood Bowl film was released instead.
