Plot summary
Weasels driving a steam shovel crush the meadow above Mole's underground home and cave it in, leaving him without a place to live. The Water Rat takes him to call on Mr. Toad, who invites them on a trip in his horse-drawn caravan. A passing motor car frightens the horse and overturns the caravan, and Toad at once becomes fixated on motoring. He is a dreadful driver and pays for his cars with loans from the Weasels, whose Chief blackmails him into selling Toad Hall. When the three meet Weasels in the Wild Wood, they take shelter at Mr. Badger's underground house, where Badger tries to talk Toad out of his obsession. Toad ignores the warning and is arrested over a stolen motor car that was crashed outside a pub.

- An arbitrated award in a lawsuit against Disney handed Columbia Pictures the US theatrical rights while Disney kept the home video rights. Because Columbia had nothing to gain on video, it chose not to promote the film or release it widely in American cinemas.
- Terry Gilliam was asked to voice The River, but his filming commitments on 12 Monkeys got in the way. The character survives in the finished film with only one piece of dialogue: he is shown with a mouth and sings a few lines of the opening song.
