Plot summary
Erik is a young Viking who finds no pleasure in the raiding life of his people. The wise woman Freya tells him that the wolf Fenrir has swallowed the sun, and that the world now endures the age of Ragnarök. Erik decides to travel to Asgard and ask the gods to bring the sunlight back. Freya says he must first find the Horn Resounding in Hy-Brasil: one note will carry his crew to Asgard, a second will wake the gods, and a third will return them home. Erik gathers men of every age and trade from his village, among them Harald, a Christian missionary who rejects the old myths. Halfdan the Black, a warlord who fears that peace will end his rule, learns of the voyage and sets sail in pursuit.
