Plot summary
At the Gstaad Palace, the staff prepare a New Year's Eve party of exceptional importance for 1999, and Hansueli Kopf sees to the whims of his high-society guests. Among them are Bongo, a former Italian porn star, Dr. Lima, a plastic surgeon, and his wife, who has Alzheimer's disease, the Marquise de la Valle, who prefers her dog to people, Arthur William Dallas III, a tycoon in his nineties, and Magnolia, his bride seventy years his junior, and Bill Crush, who boasts of wealth. Russian guests led by Anton ask Hansueli to keep suitcases of mysterious contents in the disused hotel vault, and Anton receives the only key.
