Plot summary
Rod McCain, who owns Octopus Inc., requires every asset to return 20 percent, and among the corporation's recent purchases is Marwood Zoo in England. He sends Rollo Lee, a former Hong Kong police officer, to run it. Rollo's answer is a fierce creatures policy: only the dangerous animals stay, and the keepers, among them spider handler Bugsy, set out to change his mind. Willa Weston, who is to design a business model for Octopus zoos, arrives at Marwood with Rod's son Vince McCain, the corporation's marketing manager, who is attracted to her and has his own ideas about running the zoo.

- After test audiences disliked the ending, Fierce Creatures had to be partly reshot; the delay in scheduling around Michael Palin's other commitments meant original director Robert Young was unavailable, so John Cleese brought in Fred Schepisi, with whom he had separately been discussing a Don Quixote adaptation, to direct the new footage.
- The reshoots needed to fix Fierce Creatures' ending took five weeks and cost an extra $7 million on top of the original production.
- A rough test screening of Fierce Creatures on Long Island scored only 58% positive; after new director Fred Schepisi cut ten minutes of underperforming footage, the score jumped 15 points at the next screening.
- Director Fred Schepisi tried to get producers to cut the film's opening 15 minutes entirely for a test screening, but some of that footage was later restored against his wishes, which he believed damaged the finished movie.
