Plot summary
During the communist rebellion in Malaya in 1947, the British army's Song and Dance Unit South East Asia is sent into the Malayan jungle to perform for the troops. Major Giles Flack, an eccentric, bible-bashing officer, is in command. Among the unit's members is Acting Captain Terri Dennis, a camp, ageing theatrical man who hopes to entertain the soldiers with flamboyant impressions. Stephen, a young British soldier, joins the troupe, which also numbers Acting Lieutenant Sylvia Morgan, a part-Indian woman. The troops the unit is meant to amuse are bored, and the soldiers look for other ways to enjoy themselves.

- Denis O'Brien, who ran HandMade Films, wanted every member of Monty Python in the lead roles of Privates on Parade. All of them refused except John Cleese, who agreed to play the part Nigel Hawthorne had originated on stage.
- HandMade's Denis O'Brien had extra footage of John Cleese shot to help the film, and editor Jim Clark said O'Brien persuaded him into doing silly walks to make it more commercial, against Michael Blakemore's wishes; there were rows.
- In December 1983 Denis O'Brien announced he expected Privates on Parade to be the first movie from HandMade Films to lose money.
