Plot summary
Shrek is a husband, a father and a local celebrity in Far Far Away, and the life has worn him down; he misses the solitude and the fear he once commanded. Mishaps at his children's first birthday party leave him angry enough to lash out at Fiona and storm off. Rumpelstiltskin, who blames Shrek for ruining his plan, trails him into the woods and puts on a show of needing help. Inside his carriage, Shrek says he no longer feels like a real ogre, and Rumpelstiltskin offers a trade: one day as a real ogre, paid for with a day from Shrek's childhood. Shrek signs the contract and is sent to a Far Far Away where Rumpelstiltskin rules, ogres are hunted, and Fiona has never met him.
