Plot summary
Pooh's honey pot is empty, so he goes looking for more and stops by Eeyore's place, where he sees the donkey has lost his tail. The friends in the Hundred Acre Wood hold a contest, a pot of honey for whoever brings Eeyore a good replacement, and every attempt fails. Pooh walks to Christopher Robin's house to ask for honey and finds the boy gone, with only a note behind. Owl reads the note aloud and decides it says Christopher Robin has been carried off by a creature called the Backson. Rabbit draws up a plan to trap the creature along a trail of objects, Tigger sets out to fight the Backson alone, and Pooh keeps thinking about honey.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Burny Mattinson, a Disney veteran who had been key animator on the 1974 short Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, was brought in as lead storyboard artist. His five-minute pitch for the sequence where Eeyore loses his tail is credited with convincing Disney executives to make the film a feature-length work instead of a featurette.
- Ken Sansom, asked by ABC 4 about voicing Rabbit in the film, answered “I'm not sure.” He was replaced by Tom Kenny, although Sansom claimed that he was still under contract.
- As of 2026, Winnie the Pooh is still Disney Animation's most recent traditionally animated theatrical feature film; no later hand-drawn feature has followed it from the studio.
- The film was originally supposed to feature five stories from the A. A. Milne books, but the final cut ended up drawing on three. Lasseter had also announced that Rabbit's friends and relatives would be in the film, but their scene was ultimately deleted.
