George E. Stone

Biography

George E. Stone was a Polish-born American character actor whose career took in films, radio, and television. He came to notice in the silent era as The Sewer Rat, a street thug in 7th Heaven (1927), and made the move to sound with Warner Bros.' Tenderloin. Typecasting followed, largely as streetwise figures, Runyonesque mobsters, or a gangland boss's helper, among them Otero in Little Caesar (1931). He appeared in the musical 42nd Street (1933) and took his only starring part in The Big Brain (1933), a gangster comedy. His best-known assignment was The Runt, sidekick to the reformed crook Boston Blackie in Columbia's action-comedy series, a role he and Chester Morris also played on radio. Later credits include The Man with the Golden Arm and Some Like It Hot, and he was a recurring court clerk on Perry Mason. He made his last film, Pocketful of Miracles (1961), and received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960.

Getting ready for a role
For Hal Roach's The Housekeeper's Daughter, Stone shaved his mustache to play a mentally impaired murderer as sweet natured and sympathetic, and Roach cast him in other films afterward.
