Plot summary
Janos 'Johnny' Szabo comes to New York from Hungary, an immigrant with real skill as a watchmaker and hope for a new life. On his first day in the city a hotel fire leaves his face badly scarred. Employers turn him away because of how he looks, and the trade he knows brings him nothing. With no money for food, medicine or a warm bed, he breaks into safes, though he holds that dishonesty can never bring happiness. The food, the medicine and the bed go to Dinky, the only friend he has. Lt. Jim O'Hara, a police officer in the city, becomes a friend to him.
