Mae Clarke
Biography
Mae Clarke was an American actress who began as a dancer in New York City after studying dance as a child and working in vaudeville and nightclubs. Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of a theater organist. She became a leading lady at Universal Studios, playing Elizabeth in Frankenstein (1931) and appearing that year in The Front Page. Her most famous scene came in The Public Enemy (1931), in which James Cagney pushed half a grapefruit into her face. She starred as Myra Deauville in Waterloo Bridge (1931), a performance critics praised, and remained a leading lady through the 1930s before moving into supporting roles, later taking uncredited bit parts in Singin' in the Rain (1952), The Great Caruso (1951) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967). She made her final screen appearance in Watermelon Man (1970) and also worked in episodic television. She retired in 1970 and taught drama.

At 12, Clarke took part in the Miss America Pageant Parade on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, wearing a lobster costume. In 1940 she came back to the Boardwalk Parade as a featured guest, riding on a white limousine convertible.
