Plot summary
Janet Stewart checks into a hotel to await her husband Paul, who was a prisoner of war for two years and is presumed dead; he has not arrived. She dozes on a couch and dreams that Paul is outside a door she cannot open. Waking, she goes to the window and looks into a nearby room where a man and woman quarrel. He wants a divorce and says he loves Elaine; when his wife threatens to tell everyone, he strikes her with a candlestick. Janet collapses. In the morning Paul finds her staring ahead, and the hotel doctor, judging her to be in shock, sends for Dr. Cross, who proposes his own sanatorium instead of a hospital.
