Plot summary
Chico works in the sewers of Paris and wants a job sweeping the streets above ground; the priest at a nearby church gives him the recommendation he needs. Diane, a young prostitute, lives with her sister Nana, who beats her. When the sisters' uncle and aunt come home with a fortune, the uncle asks Diane whether the two of them have lived decently, and her expression tells him what he feared. He disowns them, and Nana takes her anger out on Diane, who runs into the street, where Chico intervenes. Nana brings the police back to arrest Diane, and Chico tells them she is his wife. The officers ask for his address to check on the claim, and, afraid of losing his job over the lie, he offers Diane a room in his flat.
