Fay Wray
Biography
Fay Wray was a Canadian-American actress who started in films as a teenager and became best known for her role as Ann Darrow in King Kong (1933). Born near Cardston, Alberta, she appeared in her first film in 1923 and was named a WAMPAS Baby Star in 1926. After working under contract at Universal, where she co-starred in low-budget Westerns, she joined Paramount Pictures and was cast as the main female lead in Erich von Stroheim's The Wedding March (1928). She went on to horror films such as Doctor X (1932), The Most Dangerous Game (1932) and Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933), then starred as King Kong's captive for RKO. Her later credits included The Bowery (1933), Viva Villa! (1934), Queen Bee (1955) and Crime of Passion (1956). She acted in film and television for nearly six decades, ending with the 1980 television film Gideon's Trumpet, and received a Women in Film Crystal Award in 1989.

In 1923, at 16, Wray landed her first film role. The short historical film was sponsored by a local newspaper.

Wray attended the 70th Academy Awards as a special guest, and host Billy Crystal introduced her there as the "Beauty who charmed the Beast". She was the only actress from 1920s Hollywood present that evening.

In 1926 the Western Association of Motion Picture Advertisers picked Wray as one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars, women they thought were about to become movie stars, while she was under contract to Universal.
