Plot summary
Jack Durant, a lawyer, wins an acquittal for the racketeer Tony Gaziotti and waives his fee. His law firm objects to the client and the two part ways, and Sue Leonard, his girlfriend, turns down his proposal for the same reason. Sue then agrees to marry Tom Siddall on the condition that he give up his mistress, Mimi Montagne. Mimi, furious at the settlement Tom offers her, goes back to the gangster Jim Crelliman, who has her bring Tom to a party. A shot rings out, and Mimi is found dead on the balcony with Tom holding a revolver. Sue asks Jack to defend Tom, and he agrees despite an anonymous call warning him off. Jack asks Tony for information, and Tony introduces him to Gertie Waxted, Mimi's friend.
