Plot summary
Deaths from blood loss trouble the village of Kleinschloss, where the town fathers believe vampirism has returned and police inspector Karl Brettschneider does not. Dr. Otto von Niemann treats Martha Mueller, a patient attacked by a bat, and on the road home he meets Kringen, who says the vampire came to him as a bat. Kringen, encouraged by von Niemann, tells the villagers he suspects Hermann Gleib, who keeps bats as pets, and the fear spreads. Von Niemann's house also shelters Brettschneider's love Ruth Bertin, her aunt Gussie Schnappmann, and the servants Emil Borst and Georgiana. Martha Mueller dies that night, two puncture wounds in her neck, and Hermann flees the room screaming.
