Plot summary
Mark Sheldon is a government agent working under the code name 64. He arranges his own downfall: he stands accused of a murder he never committed and lets the case stand, so that prison will end in parole to Stephen Danel's island. There, convicts are shipped in and put to work in a diamond mine, and none of them leave. Danel rules the island and the mine. The island lies in the South Pacific. His wife, Lorraine, lives there as a prisoner too, and she asks Sheldon to help her get away. Sheldon's task is to break Danel's racket from the inside.
