Plot summary
Lester Gillis sits in Joliet prison when Rocca, a Chicago crime boss, arranges his freedom. Rocca wants the labor organizer killed, but Gillis turns the job down and takes part in the crew's holdups. He becomes involved with Sue Nelson, a woman tied to the same underworld. Police then storm his hotel room and find a weapon that Rocca left behind, making it look as though Gillis shot the organizer. Gillis promises payback. Sue helps him get away from the officers, and he begins using her last name. A pharmacy holdup leaves him wounded, and he goes to Doc Saunders, a physician who treats criminals.
