Plot summary
In San Francisco, Lieutenant Riggs brings Mr. Moto, a detective, and Lee Chan, a student in Moto's criminology class at San Francisco University, to watch Bill Steele fight Frank Stanton, with the winner promised a title bout against the champion, Biff Moran. Gangster Nick Crowder bets heavily that Stanton will not last to the fifth round, and Stanton falls in the fourth and dies. Bookie Clipper McCoy loses a fortune. Moto shows that Stanton was murdered, and that $100,000 in bets against him were placed around the country. He and Riggs work the case while the championship fight draws near.

- Fox had already spent an estimated $100,000 on the film when shooting was called off, and Sol Wurtzel, head of Fox's B movie unit, had the script rewritten as a Mr. Moto movie rather than recast Charlie Chan.
- Fox planned Charlie Chan at Ringside with Warner Oland as Chan and Keye Luke as Number One Son, but when filming began in January 1938, Oland left the film due to illness and production was suspended.
- Fox announced Warner Oland would return as Charlie Chan, but he never recovered from his illness and died in August 1938; Sidney Toler took over the role in the ongoing film series.
