Plot summary
In an unnamed big city, Hildebrand "Hildy" Johnson is the star reporter of the Morning Post. He is about to quit the newspaper business, marry Peggy Grant and take an advertising job in New York City. His editor, Walter Burns, does not want to lose him. A convicted murderer named Earl Williams is due to hang at seven the next morning for the death of a policeman, and feeling against anarchists is running high in the city. Burns is determined to keep Hildy on that story. Hours before the hanging, Williams escapes custody while reenacting the killing for an Austrian alienist, using the gun Sheriff Pinky Hartman had carelessly lent the doctor, and Hildy and Burns hide the fugitive in a rolltop desk in the press room.
