Maurice Black

Biography

Maurice Black was an American character actor who worked in more than 100 films between 1928 and 1938. Born in Queens in 1891, he absorbed the dialects he heard in his native New York and became an all-purpose supporting player, frequently cast as immigrants or urban gangsters with international backgrounds. He had roles in Little Caesar (1931) and Smart Money (1931), both starring Edward G. Robinson, and in the comedy The Front Page (1931), by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. His other credits included The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), a Boris Karloff thriller, and Bonnie Scotland (1935), a Laurel and Hardy comedy. He died in 1938, and his film career ended with his death.
