Plot summary
In 1964, the sculptor Alberto Giacometti lives and works in a Paris studio that also serves as his home, together with his wife Annette and his brother Diego. He runs into James Lord, an American writer, and asks him to sit for a portrait that he says will take two days. When the two days pass, Giacometti asks for another week, and Lord puts off his return home and his writing to stay. The portrait moves in starts and stops, and Giacometti often blanks out the face and starts over. Annette is disturbed by the open marriage he insists on and by the models he keeps around the studio.
