Plot summary
In 1585 Spain is the most powerful country in Europe, and Pope Sixtus V urges King Philip II to use his navy to invade England and restore it to Catholicism. Philip agrees, planning to put his daughter Isabella on the English throne in Elizabeth's place. Elizabeth's adviser, Francis Walsingham, presses her to marry, warning that if she dies childless the crown passes to her Catholic cousin Mary Stuart, who is held under house arrest in the north. Jesuit conspirators in London work with Philip on a plot to kill Elizabeth and replace her with Mary. Elizabeth, who will not force her people to share her faith, receives the explorer Walter Raleigh at court and is taken with his accounts of the New World.

- Cate Blanchett's second Oscar nomination as Elizabeth I made her the first female performer ever nominated twice for playing the same role. Alexandra Byrne won the film's other nomination, for Costume Design.
- Monsignor Mark Langham, administrator of Westminster Cathedral, was attacked by fellow Catholics for letting the production film inside the cathedral. He called the film a must-see but said it did appear to perpetuate the myth of killer priests.
