Plot summary
Ned Kelly saves a boy from drowning as a child and is awarded a hero sash. He grows up in the colony of Victoria, the son of an Irish Catholic settler, with his widowed mother Ellen, his brother Dan and his sisters Kate and Grace; his friend Joe and Dan's friend Steve are often at the house. At seventeen he rides a white mare he finds grazing into town to impress a girl named Jane and is imprisoned three years for stealing it, though Wild Wright took the horse.
