Plot summary
Soren, a young barn owl in Tyto Forest, never tires of his father's tales about the Guardians of Ga'Hoole. His older brother Kludd, jealous that Soren is learning to fly faster, shoves him off a branch, and both owlets fall to the ground. A Tasmanian devil attacks them; two owls named Jatt and Jutt drive it off and take the brothers to St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls. Nyra, queen of the Pure Ones, declares there that the young owls will serve as soldiers or pickers, hunting flecks of magnetic metal for a weapon. Kludd becomes a soldier. Soren and the elf owl Gylfie become pickers and are forced through moon-blinking, which bends their minds while they sleep. The two resist, and a boreal owl named Grimble teaches them to fly and tells them of the Great Tree of Ga'Hoole.

- The end credits show Soren, Gylfie, Digger and Twilight telling their own adventures as though putting on a shadow play in the Great Tree. Felicity Coonan conceived the sequence as a playful experiment in 2D and 3D, since shadow puppetry is a 2D form, and it took around three months to animate.
