Plot summary
Rather than kill the last member of a rival clan, an infant girl, Yang leaves his homeland and carries the child to the American West. In the town of Lode he searches for a fellow rogue warrior the townspeople called Smiley, only to find that Smiley died three years earlier. Yang takes over the laundry and gives the baby the name April. He meets Eight-Ball and the carnival crew, Ron the town drunk, and Lynne, a young woman who was a friend of Smiley. Lynne nicknames him Skinny, shows him a gramophone and speaks of the Sad Flute clan, asking Yang to teach her swordplay, though he is unwilling. His sword stays welded to its scabbard.
