Plot summary
Lucinda Leplastrier grows up in Australia after her parents die young, and a glass bead given to her as a child leaves her with a lasting fascination for glass. Her guardians sell the family farmland, and with the money she buys a glass factory; her accountant introduces her to gambling. Oscar Hopkins is reared by his father as a Plymouth Brother, and after a sign from God he joins the Anglican faith. Studying for the ministry, he takes up gambling, uses his winnings to pay for his studies and gives what is left to the poor. A scholarship takes him to New South Wales, and on the ship he meets Lucinda, who confesses that she gambles. He tells her it is not a sin. The two play cards until a storm panics Oscar.

- Producer Robin Dalton bought the film rights to Peter Carey's novel before it was even published and set up John Schlesinger to direct in 1990. After years passed without a script anyone liked, Schlesinger dropped out and Gillian Armstrong took over, bringing in Laura Jones to write the screenplay.
- Thomas Newman's track "Sydney Harbor" from the Oscar and Lucinda score was later used in a teaser trailer for Wall-E, another film Newman conducted the score for.
