Plot summary
Willie Johnson is a teenage boy in Broome, Western Australia, where the summer of 1969 passes in fishing and time with his friends. His mother Theresa intends him for the priesthood and sends him to a Catholic boarding school in Perth, run by Father Benedictus, where boys train to become priests. On a vacation home he loses his heart to Rosie, a young singer, and envies the attention other boys pay her. Caught stealing food from the school kitchen, Willie runs off before anyone can punish him and sets out for Broome. On the road he meets Tadpole, a homeless man who says he is Willie's uncle. The hippies Slippery and Annie take the pair into their van, and Father Benedictus sets out after Willie.
