Plot summary

In April 1938, a voice called Death begins telling the story of Liesel Meminger, who travels by train with her mother and younger brother; the boy dies, and at his burial Liesel picks up a gravedigger's handbook dropped by the graveside. Her mother, a Communist in danger, delivers her to foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann in Molching, where Liesel cannot read and Hans begins teaching her from that book. She meets Rudy Steiner, the neighbor boy, and the two join the Hitler Youth. At a Nazi book burning she salvages a book, watched by Ilsa Hermann, the mayor's wife, who opens her library to the girl. The Hubermanns also hide Max Vandenburg, a Jewish refugee and the son of a man who once saved Hans's life in the First World War.
