Plot summary
Elizabeth Hunter lies gravely ill in her Sydney house, attended by two nurses, Maria and Flora, her housekeeper, Lotte, and the family solicitor, Arnold Wyburd, who has loved her for years. Her son Basil, a famous actor in London who now struggles for work, and her daughter Dorothy, a divorced princess with little money, travel back to Australia and gather at her bedside. Neither child ever felt loved by their mother, and her authority over the household is unchanged. They have come for the fortune she will leave behind, and they intend to carry it out of the country with them.
