Plot summary
Dan is a poet living in Sydney, and Candy is an art student there. The two fall passionately in love, and Candy gravitates to Dan's bohemian lifestyle and to his love of heroin. The pair depend on each other as much as on the drug, and money for it is scarce. They frequently seek out cash for a fix, borrowing from Candy's parents or from Casper, an eccentric university professor, and they turn to theft when their sources run dry. Candy sells her grandmother's ring at a pawn shop, where she has sex with the shop owner for fifty dollars.
