Plot summary

Left partially immobile by a stroke suffered while passing sentence in court, judge Stefan Mortensen takes what he hopes will be a temporary place in a care home and shares a room with Tony Garfield, a former rugby player. Stefan keeps to himself, which draws the notice of Dave Crealy, a long-term resident who seems confused by day and bullies the other residents at night. Crealy comes to the room in the dark, throws a bottle of urine over Stefan and makes Tony plead with a hand puppet named Jenny Pen. When Stefan complains to the staff, they tell him that Crealy has accused him of stealing, and their suspicion grows when knickers and false teeth that Crealy hid in his room are found.
