Plot summary

In a land where the gods live alongside mortals, Set kills his brother Osiris at the coronation of Osiris's son Horus, takes Horus's eyes in the fight that follows and names himself king. Set then demands that people pay riches to pass into the afterlife. A year later, the thief Bek and his lover Zaya steal plans for Set's pyramid from the chief architect Urshu. Bek enters Set's treasure vault and comes away with one of Horus's eyes, which he carries to the exiled Horus. Bek offers to help find the second eye if Horus will bring Zaya back to life, and the two set out together.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Gods of Egypt (2016)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • While the film's production budget was $140 million, parent company Lionsgate's financial exposure was less than $10 million because of tax incentives and pre-sales; the Australian government provided a tax credit for 46% of the film's budget.
  • Boseman, who plays the god Thoth, said he expected the whitewashing backlash when he saw the script and agreed with it: "That's why I wanted to do it, so you would see someone of African descent playing Thoth, the father of mathematics, astronomy, the god of wisdom."
  • When Lionsgate began promoting the film in November 2015, it immediately received backlash for its predominantly white cast playing Egyptian deities; in response, Lionsgate and director Proyas apologized for their ethnically-inaccurate casting.
  • In the film the gods stand 9 ft tall in humanoid form and over 12 ft tall in "battle beast" form, so Proyas used forced perspective and motion control photography for the height difference, calling the logistical challenge a "reverse Hobbit".
  • In August 2024, over eight years after its release, Deadline Hollywood reported that the film had finally managed to break even, following its fifth and sixth home release windows.
  • For the god Thoth, who can appear as many copies, actor Chadwick Boseman was filmed hundreds of times from different angles; for one scene with many copies of Thoth, other actors took a day to film it while Boseman filmed for three days.
