Plot summary
Charlie Chan and his son Jimmy fly to San Francisco. On the plane Jimmy befriends the insurance executive Thomas Gregory, and Charlie's friend, the novelist Paul Essex, dies after a radiogram warns him not to ignore Zodiac; his briefcase goes missing. On the ground Charlie meets Deputy Police Chief J.J. Kilvaine, the reporter Peter Lewis and the magician Fred Rhadini, who tells him about Dr. Zodiac, a man who claims psychic powers and preys on the city's wealthy residents. Charlie, Rhadini and Lewis visit Dr. Zodiac's home and watch a séance, and Charlie learns that Eve Cairo, Lewis's fiancée, has been meeting the psychic, which angers Lewis. Jimmy follows Thomas Gregory for the rest of the afternoon.
