Plot summary
Fur trapper Flint Mitchell comes down from the mountains to sell his pelts and spend time drinking and competing with the other mountain men. He decides to take a hunting brigade into Blackfoot country, which is rich in beaver, and recruits trappers and buys horses for the journey. His Scottish friend Brecan, who lives among the Blackfoot, warns him that the land belongs to the tribe. Flint pays more than Brecan for Kamiah, whose grandfather is the Blackfoot medicine man Bear Ghost and whose adoptive father is the Nez Perce chief Looking Glass, and marries her so the brigade can travel in safety. Brecan wants to take her home to her people to keep peace between the tribes. Kamiah guides the party over high, snowbound passes into Blackfoot country, where the men build a stockade.

- Ricardo Montalbán was reportedly thrown from a horse, knocked unconscious and trampled by another horse during filming, causing a spinal injury that recurred in 1993 and confined him to a wheelchair.
- MGM producer Sam Zimbalist suggested the adult Chip Mitchell narration after negative audience reaction to the film's excessive length; he felt it would let the film be edited while maintaining the story's integrity, but director William A. Wellman was devastated by the cuts and disowned the film.
