Plot summary
Insurance salesman Albert Tuttle calls on eccentric millionaire Cyrus J. Rutherford to sell him a $200,000 policy and learns that the man has just died. The mansion is crowded with relatives who, by the will's terms, must stay until a glass-domed vault is finished on the roof to hold the body; Rutherford had been a follower of the stars. The family takes Tuttle for the private detective engaged to watch over the corpse. When that confusion is settled and the detective fails to appear, Rutherford's niece Carol Dunlap talks him into staying on as guard. Where Rutherford is buried decides the shares: laid anywhere except the vault, the biggest bequests shrink to the smallest and the smallest swell to the biggest, so one recipient has a reason to move the body first.
