Victor Jory

Biography

Victor Jory was a Canadian-American actor whose work ranged across theater, film, television, and radio. Born in Dawson City, Yukon, in 1902, he trained at the Martha Oatman School of the Theater, based in Los Angeles, and toured with stage troupes before reaching Broadway and making his Hollywood debut in 1930. He began in romantic leads but became best known for villainous or sinister parts, including the villain in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), Jonas Wilkerson in Gone with the Wind (1939), and Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935). He appeared in more than 150 films and dozens of television episodes, wrote two plays, and starred in the radio series Dangerously Yours. Other notable credits were The Fugitive Kind (1960) and The Miracle Worker (1962), and from 1959 to 1961 he led the police drama Manhunt. He received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960 and died in 1982.

Jory taught acting in the Department of Theater at the University of Utah. He also endowed the Victor Jory Scholarship there for junior and senior students in that department.
