Plot summary
Ransome Callicut rides west by stagecoach as an undercover government agent. His cover is that of a schoolteacher traveling to 1850s California, where secessionists want the southern part of the state to break from the Union and become a slave state. On the road, the bandit Vic Sutro tries to rob the coach, and Callicut captures him, turning him over to Captain Roy Giles once the passengers reach California. Lora Roberts, a schoolteacher on the same coach, has made the trip to marry Giles. Callicut's task is to gather intelligence on the secessionist plot, and Sergeant Monk Walker and Corporal Olaf Swenson are the men who aid him.
