Plot summary

In the late 19th century West, Graham Dorsey rides with a gang of bank robbers toward a small-town bank, but a nightmare of the gang being wiped out has left him uneasy. When his horse breaks a leg, the men need another mount and try to take one from the ranch of widow Amanda Starbuck. She is suspicious of them and says she has no horse. Graham spots one in her barn, yet tells his men to ride on without him. He has another reason to stay: he wants Amanda. She resists him by lying motionless in her clothes, so he pretends to be impotent to win her sympathy, and the ruse works. They talk about their lives and hopes, and Graham says he would like to give up robbing and work in a bank.
