Plot summary

Broken Lance, Kansas, in the late 1800s, is a small town on the Pacific Railroad. John Bonniwell, a Civil War sniper traveling toward a gold mine in Oregon, breaks up a raid on the local bank by the Jesse James gang and takes a bullet doing it. He wakes in the hospital to learn that bank president Steve Barat covered his medical costs and had him elected town marshal. Eleanor Sager, who owns the town's only hotel and looked after him, persuades him to keep the post. Barat runs Broken Lance and expects an official who does as he is told. He bills the rancher Tom Waggoner an exorbitant fee to move his herd across the banker's property, and John, told to arrest him, refuses.
