Charles Halton

Biography

Charles Halton was an American character actor with more than 180 films to his name. Born in Washington, D.C., he studied at the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts. In the early 1900s he toured Europe with Lillian Russell, made his Broadway debut in 1901, and went on to appear in about 35 productions over 50 years. In 1911 he spent the summer with the stock cast at Elitch Theatre in Denver, Colorado. From the 1920s, his rimless glasses, thinning hair, and officious manner were familiar to moviegoers, who saw him as neighborhood busybodies, stern government men, and weaselly attorneys. His best-known roles included the hotel doctor Dr. Glass in Room Service (1938), an Idaho county official in Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941), and Dobosh, a Polish theater producer, in To Be or Not to Be (1942). He played against type in Enemy of Women (1944), worked in many television series, and retired after High School Confidential (1958).
