Plot summary
Father Roth counsels a fellow priest, Father George, who is discouraged by the hardships of the parish and wants to leave it. Roth answers with the story of Martin Lynn, who needs money to marry his girlfriend and to send his sick mother to Arizona to recuperate. Martin resents the church and Father Kirkman, who refused his father a proper burial. After his mother dies, Martin tells Craig, an older smooth talker with gambling issues, that he wants a grand funeral for her but cannot afford one.

- The church exterior in Edge of Doom was a set built in a parking lot on a side street in downtown Los Angeles's Wholesale District, an area rarely used for filming since Harold Lloyd comedies like Safety Last!, and crowds of onlookers forced the crew to alternate location days with studio days.
- Samuel Goldwyn said he put Edge of Doom back before the cameras because he thought it needed a young girl, cast Mala Powers in that part, and later enlarged an earlier sequence between the murderer and his mother.
- Producer Samuel Goldwyn's wife read an outline of Edge of Doom and persuaded him to buy the film rights to the book for $125,000, just before Twentieth-Century Fox's Darryl F. Zanuck submitted a higher bid.
