A Million to Juan (1994) on Netflix

Plot summary

Juan Lopez was born in a strawberry field in Bakersfield, California, and grew up in Mexico after his mother moved the family there. He now lives in Los Angeles with his young son, Alejandro, selling bags of oranges near a freeway and cooking for the roommates who share his home. He holds no green card, and he is raising the boy alone after his wife's death. One afternoon a stranger in a limousine stops at his corner and quietly hands him a check for one million dollars, on the condition that he give all of it back in a month. Juan shows the check to Olivia Smith, the social worker for his son, and she urges him to do as the stranger asked. The people around him push him to use the check to obtain credit instead.
