Plot summary
Cuco, a young Mexican boy parrot, lives with his family at their bird circus and would rather imitate the wild stunts of El Americano, the super-parrot he watches on television, than help with chores. His father is the ringmaster of the show. A band of bully birds threatens his father and takes control of the circus, so Cuco decides to go for help. He sets off from Mexico for Hollywood to find El Americano, a famous superhero, and ask him to join his fight. His friends come along, and the group travels toward the border between Mexico and the United States.

- El Americano was planned as a traditional 2D animated film, but Edward James Olmos insisted director Ricardo Arnaiz switch to CG animation as the film's best chance of success, according to Boxel Studios founder Andres Reyes Botello.
- Mexico's RTC had rated El Americano B, but after complaints on social media it checked its database, called the rating an 'error' and changed it to AA, allowing children aged 7 and older to attend.
- El Americano was the first major animated co-production between studios in Mexico and the United States, and the first international and first CG film for Animex Producciones, its fourth feature.
- According to director Ricardo Arnaiz, El Americano was the most expensive film from Animex Producciones and the first of its films to exceed 29 million pesos.
