Trailer

Plot summary

Paul Hackett spends his days at a computer terminal in an uptown Manhattan office, and a late night at a café interrupts the routine when he falls into conversation with Marcy Franklin, a stranger who hands him her phone number. He rides a taxi downtown to her SoHo apartment, and on the way his only twenty-dollar bill sails out the window, which leaves him with almost no money and an angry driver. Marcy shares the apartment with Kiki Bridges, a sculptor who sells bagel-shaped paperweights in plaster and has a big papier-mâché man underway. When Marcy comes back, her jumpy behavior makes Paul uneasy, and he walks out on the date. The subway fare has gone up at midnight, and the change in his pocket no longer covers the ride back to his apartment.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about After Hours (1985)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • After Hours was originally to be directed by Tim Burton, after Dunne and Robinson were impressed with his short film Vincent, but Burton willingly stepped aside when Scorsese expressed interest in the project.
  • The project began as One Night in Soho, from a script by Joseph Minion, then 26, written as an assignment for his film course at Columbia University and titled Lies after a 1982 Joe Frank monologue. Frank said he was not asked for rights to the story.
  • One of Scorsese's contributions was the dialogue between Paul and the doorman at Club Berlin, inspired by Franz Kafka's "Before the Law" from The Trial. He told Paul Attanasio the story reflected his frustration toward the production of The Last Temptation of Christ.
  • SPOILERSteven Spielberg suggested that the film end with the statue falling off the truck and breaking into thousands of pieces, Paul not inside it but out on the expressway yelling that the invaders are coming. Terry Gilliam told him to cut that scene.
  • SPOILERBritish director Michael Powell took part in the production, and when nobody was sure how the film should end he said that Paul must finish up back at work, an idea initially dismissed as too unlikely and difficult. He and editor Thelma Schoonmaker married soon afterward.
  • After Hours was the first fictional film directed by Scorsese since Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore in 1974 not to feature Robert De Niro.
