Plot summary
Outside a New York City shop, orphaned kittens wait to be adopted, and every one finds an owner except an orange tabby, who takes to the streets. He meets Dodger, a Jack Russell Terrier who steals hot dogs from a vendor, and follows him to a barge shared by Tito, Einstein, Francis, Rita and their owner Fagin, a petty thief who owes the loan shark Sykes money and has three days to repay. Sykes' Dobermanns Roscoe and DeSoto threaten the kitten, and he claws DeSoto's nose. The next day Fagin's dogs and the kitten try to rob the car of a wealthy family, the Foxworths. The attempt fails, and Jenny, a girl whose parents are away and may miss her eighth birthday, adopts the kitten and names him Oliver, to the jealousy of Georgette, the family's poodle.
