Plot summary
Joe Treviño and his friends Felipe, Mario, Gene and Lupe caddie at the Del Rio country club, carrying clubs for members like Judge Milton Cox while being barred from the course themselves. J.B. Peña, the town's new school superintendent, a onetime Marine, is turned down when he asks the club president for membership. A ball Joe hits across a field shatters the window of J.B.'s passing car, and J.B. offers to overlook the damage if the five form a golf team. Frank Mitchell, a golf pro and an old friend of J.B.'s from the Marines, agrees to coach them once he sees them hit. Their first tournament brings hostility over their ethnicity, but their conduct earns them a place at the next one.
